Valley Field Restoration

One of Andy J. DeVries’ most visible and meaningful community efforts has been his leadership in preserving and restoring historic Sullivan Field — also known today as Valley Field — one of Grand Rapids’ most treasured athletic landmarks.

Originally opened in 1937, Sullivan Field has long been an important part of West Michigan sports history, hosting generations of athletes, families, students, and community events. Recognizing the field’s historic significance and its importance to future generations, Andy became deeply involved in efforts to preserve and revitalize the facility for the community.

As Co-Founder and President of Fans of Valley Field, Andy helped lead a major grassroots and community-driven movement dedicated to restoring the historic ballpark. Through fundraising, community partnerships, public engagement, and long-term planning, the organization worked alongside local leaders, donors, volunteers, and the City of Grand Rapids to breathe new life into the aging stadium while honoring its rich history.

Under Andy’s leadership, the Valley Field restoration effort became more than simply a construction project — it became a mission to preserve community heritage, youth athletics, and a shared sense of history for future generations. The project united former players, coaches, historians, community supporters, and baseball fans around a common vision of protecting one of Grand Rapids’ iconic gathering places.

Andy’s passion for Valley Field reflected many of the same values that guided his life’s work: mentorship, teamwork, community pride, preserving history, and creating opportunities for young people. His dedication helped transform the restoration effort into a lasting legacy project that will continue serving families, athletes, schools, and the West Michigan community for years to come.

Today, the restoration of Valley Field stands as a powerful example of Andy DeVries’ lifelong belief that strong communities are built by people willing to invest their time, leadership, and heart into preserving places and opportunities that matter.
